Ashland's Downtown Plaza Ashland is one of the coolest towns you will ever visit. We are home to the world famous Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Our historic downtown has been preserved and looks much like it did at the turn of the century. The Ashland Plaza has dozens of quaint shops and boutiques and our restaurants are unsurpassed. Ashland's Lithia Park The Southern Oregon area is a vacationer's paradise, offering miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, white water rafting, rock climbing, and skiing. Crater Lake and Redwood National Parks, Oregon Caves National Monument, the proposed Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument and the Klamath Wildlife Refuge are just a drive away. Ashland Bicycle Rentals

The following Ashland businesses rent bicycles by the hour or day. They rent on a seasonal basis, from March through Oct. UBI bicycles are used for classroom instruction only and are therefore not available for student transportation.

We encourage you to bring your own bicycle. Southern Oregon has hundreds of miles of rural paved roads and miles of great single track trails. All are within minutes of UBI. Bikes may be shipped to UBI via United Parcel Service for a reasonable fee. Our shipping address is 401 Williamson Way, Ashland, OR 97520. We can also help you ship your bike back home again. Daily Essentials

  • Groceries: Ashland has several major supermarkets scattered around town. The Ashland Food Co-Op and Safeway are both located within 6 blocks from the school. Between April and October, the Grower's and Crafter's Market sells fresh, locally grown produce every Tuesday from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm in the parking lot of the National Guard Armory, about 1 mile from UBI.
  • Restaurants: Ashland is known for its eateries. Most of Ashland's 80 or so restaurants are within walking distance of UBI.
  • Laundry: There is a laundry facility at the Cycle Hostel and there are several public laundromats in town.
  • Newspapers: Both of our local newspapers have web sites. The Ashland Daily Tidings is our local paper and the Medford Mail Tribune covers the entire Southern Oregon area.
  • Internet Access: UBI does not provide Internet access, but many locations around town have both wired and wireless access. The Ashland Public Library, 410 Siskiyou Blvd., is a great place for wired access. Ashland also has over 20 wireless locations as part of its "Ashland Unwired" project. Bicycle Shops
There are four full service bike shops in Ashland. All four shops offer 10% discounts to visiting UBI students.
Local Rides
There are two local cycling clubs that hold regular weekend rides that are open to the public, Siskiyou Velo and Southern Oregon Mountain Bike Association (SOMBA). Local ride and event information is also available from their respective web sites.

Southern Oregon Tourist Attractions

Mt Ashland Ski Area
  • Adventure Center, (800) 444-2819, featuring raft trips, ski and bike tours, ballooning, horseback riding, and bike rentals.
  • Cabaret Theater, (541) 488-2902, professional dinner theater with exquisite cuisine featuring musicals, revues and comedy.
  • Britt Festivals, offers a huge variety of music and dance concerts throughout the summer in nearby Jacksonville, Oregon.
  • Stillwater is a local club that hosts lots of live music.
  • Crater Lake National Park, only 2 hours away and well worth the drive. You can cycle around the 33 mile rim of the lake during summer months, a spectacular ride you'll never forget.
  • Noah's River Adventures, professional rafting and fishing guide service specializing rafting and fishing trips.
  • Mount Ashland Ski Area, (541) 482-2897, just 30 minutes from downtown Ashland, with 4 chair lifts, 23 ski runs and 1,150 feet vertical. Shakespeare Festival
  • Oregon Shakespeare Festival, (541) 482-4331, world famous Tony Award winning festival, for which Ashland is best known. Advance ticket reservations are a must during peak tourist season.
  • Oregon Caves National Monument, about 2 hours from Ashland, is home to an active marble cave created by natural forces over hundreds of thousands of years. Above ground is a majestic old-growth coniferous forest.
  • Rogue River National Forest, featuring hundreds of miles of mountain biking and hiking trails,horseback riding, cross country and downhill skiing, snowmobiling, fishing and more!
  • Siskiyou Field Institute provides outdoor programs that connect you with the unique natural history of the Klamath-Siskiyou region.

Commercial Transportation to Ashland

Your local travel agent can provide you with current travel rates and will answer your specific travel related questions.
The Medford International Airport, located 15 miles north of Ashland, is served by United Air Lines, 1-800-241-6522, America West Airlines 800-235-9292, Horizon Air 800-547-9308 and Delta, 800-221-1212.
Cascade Airport Shuttle provides service from the Medford Airport to Ashland and back for a nominal fee, (541) 488-1998 or toll free (888) 760-7433. They can also transport bikes! Please call ahead for pickup reservations. Yellow Cab also provides taxi service at (541) 482-3065.
Greyhound serves Medford, 15 miles from Ashland (call your local Greyhound office for information). The Shuttle, Inc. (541-883-2609) provides daily shuttle service from the Medford Greyhound station to Ashland. The Rogue Valley Transportation District (RVTD) provides local bus service, (541) 779-2877.
The nearest Amtrak station is in Klamath Falls, located approximately 80 miles from Ashland (1-800-872-7245).
