>>I'm going to guess that your CHAIN is the wrong type ... the 9-speed Ultegra requires that the chain-type MATCH the front derailleur-type ... 8-speed chain (e.g., HG-70) with an 8-speed front derailleur AND a 9-speed chain (e.g., HG-73) with a 9-speed front derailleur.

>>So, if you have a "new" 9-speed chain, but did not ALSO change the front derailleur, it won't shift properly.

>That's just nonsense. It's a new bike with 9 speed everything. Besides, 8 speed 600(ultegra) was never made as a triple, so there could be no mixing of chains/FDs. FWIW, a 9 speed shimano triple road FD will work with an 8 speed chain anyway.Done it several times.

Jim, if you weren't so pathetically rudely abrupt AND/OR illiterate, I wouldn't bother to reply; but, in the spirit of the season, I will bestow upon you a partial gift of literacy.

Chas E. stated that his bike has a 6 month old Ultegra triple setup. While he may have bought the bike THAT way, he did not make THAT statement.

If he had bought the bike from a shop THAT way, then it wouldn't it be up to the shop to make amends?

You may assume whatever you want when you attempt to fathom the nuances of the English language, but the rest of us will make replies based on what has been stated.

Chas E.'s problem will never be resolved by reading Park Tool's verbiage if the chain's width/speed-type doesn't match the front derailleur's cage width/speed-type when using Shimano's indexed shifters and on a TRIPLE crankset. THAT's just the way it is.

FWIW. While you may be able to use an 8-speed chain with a 9-speed front derailleur (particularly, with a double crankset), attempting to use a 9-speed chain with a 8-speed front derailleur whose cage is WIDER will result in endless frustration when trying to adjust a Shimano indexed triple -- the wider derailleur cage just isn't capable of pushing the narrower chain far enough to make the shift.

Merry Christmas.
