Message: I'm fixing a 1970s Gitane tandem. The rear axle was loose, so I took apart the hub and put it back together. After carefully adjusting, the axle still has significant play, but only on the freewheel side. That makes me think that the I'm missing a bearing, but I took back apart and there are 9 bearings on each side. There is a more extra room on the freewheel side hub after inserting the bearings (enough room for an additional bearing). Is it possible that the freewheel side requires one more bearing than the left side? Or is it likely I have the wrong size bearings on the freewheel side? Or is it possible there is another problem besides the bearings? Thanks for the help. Would love to get this back on the road safely.
