>Thanks for everyone's posts. After talking to Shimano Tech. and reveiwing info I have gathered, here is what I have found: Many, but not all gear combos will shift rub-free in the front deraileur. The chainline angle is too great on some.
> Operating: lowest 3 gears use granny
> middle 3 gears use middle ring
> top 3 gears use large ring
>This always works. The actual range is greater.
> Adjusting: set limit screws for cage clearance at large and granny rings. Just barely enough not to rub. This usually keeps the chain from throwing.
> Cable tension: adjust for cage clearance using
>small/large ring combo, then fine tune tension using large/granny for outer cage clearance.
> Now, best of all, IT WORKS! I was out riding this weekend, and narry a CRUNCH!

Sure it works !! ...Adjusting it right and using it correctly is the simmple answer. Dreaming up unlikely worst case senarios and having you chase after you own tail is the hard way. I'll give you the KISS answer first, and if that doesn't work, then one can systematically check the other possibilities.
