Is it safe and a reasonable proposition to have the stays spread from 126mm to 135mm by having a good bike shop cold setting it, or is the degree of spread too extreme? thanksModern road spacing is 130mm not 135mm--I am assuming this is a road frame. Spreading it 4 mm is no big deal. However, if you really need it to go to 135mm (mtn bike spacing) requires 9mm of spreading by cold setting, and that is pushing it, although doable. Spreading it that much could lead to a brazed seatstay or chainstay bridge popping free, at least I've seen it happen before. If it is a good bike shop, as you say, they should let you know what they feel comfortable doing.
