If you are worried about using a Shimano MTB rear derailleur on a road bike with STI shifting, then stop worrying ... I have used XTR rear derailleurs (both so-called 8-speed & 9-speed) with 9-speed Ultegra & 8-speed 105 shifters AND am currently using the XTR rear derailleurs with Campagnolo Ergo shifters!

The 9-speed rear derailleur will index with your 8-speed bar end shifters ...

I think you have the info reversed regarding the largest cog that Shimano specs their rear derailleurs for -- the 9-speed ROAD rear derailleurs are spec'd for only a 27t maximum cog, and most of the 9-speed MTB are spec'd for a 34t maximum cog.

FWIW. The pulley wheels for the 8-speed & 9-speed Shimano derailleurs are the SAME width (at least, that is the case with all of the various 8-speed & 9-speed Shimano rear derailleurs that I have).
