Yes, last year,I converted an older 7 speed Shimano, I think the groupo. was called at that time compact-C or something similar, to a nine speed by changing both shifter (obviously), chain and cassette. Didn't find any problem shifting. I've since change the crankset to an LX and keep the original FD and RD and everything is shifting OK.
