V-brakes are centered using the small adjusting screws on the sides. Turning the screw inward will increase the return-spring tension on that side and thus move the arm outward. Conversley, backing the screw outward will reduce the spring tension, moving the arm inward. Simply adjust one or both screws until the brake shoes are equal distance to the rim.

>Just got a new mtn bike and I can't figure out how to adjust my rear Shimano XT V-Brake. The problem is that the brake is not centered on the wheel so that the left pad rubs the rim while there is a large gap on the right pad. Adjusting the cable length does not help.
