Any Shimano 8 speed other than dura ace will also usually shift a 7 speed cogset. The cog spacing between 7 and 8 speed is different, but close enough that it works. check www.harriscyclery.com for 7 speed rsx.

I have the same situation. Through research and talking with a lot of different people, I learned that the Shimano Sora shifter in 8 speed will work. The Sora are durable and comfortable. My mechanic continues to have problems with older RSX shifters breaking down. Sora now makes a 7 speed for upgrades. I was told, it is possible that a new front derailleur will be needed, because the mechanism for shifting is different from the STI style. He suggested a 105 front derailleur, if it was needed. In other words...do some legwork, and consult an experienced mechanic to have the change made. I have an older Klein Quantum and my mechanic told me that the cost of an STI upgrade would be worth the investment (he bought a bunch of Sora 8 speed shifters at a great price, retail about $90). He said some people may be better off just buying a newer bike.
