I have 2000 105 STI levers and am experiencing a rattle in my left lever only. It appears to be the cover with the Shimano logo that is rattling. It drives me nuts and is a little upsetting given the bike only has 650 miles on it.

What type of "creative maintenance" have you tried?

>Don't misunderstand me...I have great respect for Shimano and spec. Ultegra on many bikes. However!!! it really ticks me off that Shimano designed the Ultegra lever this way. If you look carefully at it, you can see it is designed to begin to rattle after a few thousand miles.

>You can easily prevent this by doing a little creative maintenance once a year.

>SHIMANO! wake up! Ultegra is a premium groupo and alot of folks use it only because it shifts a triple. Quality quality quality, please.

>Steps off the soap box.

>>>I have heard of and am also experiencing a RATTLING problem on my Ultegra STI 9-spd shifters, particulary on rough road surfaces. I have occasioned remedies such as silicon sealing the removable snap-on covers - offering some relief. Is this problem relative to design and understood by Shimano ? ..........................................Answer:yes. I also understand the problem has been adressed in the 2001 levers.
