>The right 8 speed STI shifter on my 93 Trek 2300 is shot. Can somebody offer any advice on how to get up and running again. I don't want to convert to 9 speed, too expensive. I'd really appreciate the info.

My shifter stopped up-shifting. I took it apart and found a horseshoe shaped spring clip that was no longer helping the up-shift mechanism to release. I guess over time it became too squeezed together. I spread it apart with a pair of pliers and it is now working fine. I don't know how long it will hold up though. Also you need some mechanical aptitude to be able to remove and reassemble the spring loaded brake mechanism and the end cover; which has a bolt under the plastic cap you must pry off. It is glued on. I would not recommend attempting to fully take the whole thing apart. A special nut holds the guts together and if you removed this I think it would be next to impossible to get it back together. That's why I grabbed the end of the clip on the right side (located in the center of the assembly that contols up-shifting and down-shifting) and pulled out and downward to spread it back out. It is difficult to describe this using text but I've tried. I also found a small spring that holds one of the pawl retainers off, and reset it. In summary: Remove the chrome end that the shifter cable goes through by prying off the platic cap to get at the bolt. Remove the spring loaded pin from the brake lever by removing the set screw and then tapping the pin out with a small drift pin and hammer. You will have a tough time getting this back together because you have to hold the end of the spring out as you replace the lever to then replace the pin. Then move the up-shift lever over to access the screw that holds the brake lever / down-shifter on. Then pull the brake lever off and then you will have access to the guts. On the right side, near the middle of all the gears, etc. you will see the two ends of the little horseshoe shaped clip. I hope I have helped you.
