>Hi, just surfed in and realized I found an excellent technical resource in this site, I am gathering parts to build a bike on an 84 Schwinn Paramount frame, 126mm spacing and would like to use a Shimano freehub, is/was there a 7spd freehub that will fit in this old frame? If not I still like my old Hyperglide freewheels as they are cheap. I would be open to any advice on building and selecting component group on this bike. Feel free to e-mail me direct.

I've ridden a 7 speed with a 126 spaced frame for years. The compact 7 speed uses the same ammount of room as the standard 6 speed, maybe just a little more (.6mm on Shimano spec's), but Shimano doesn't make freewheels any more. Sach's makes a 7 speed freewheel, the Aris, with cogs from 12 to 32 with unlimited combinations. They are hard to find, the Third Hand/Loose Screws sells all the cogs, they might be able to get a body, try them at 541-488-4800. For freehubs, 126 spaced 7 speeds are available, but I would stay away from them for your Paramount, it wouldn't be right!

If you want to do the frame justice, you need as much Campy as you can get. I would forget the Hyperglide freewheel, try to find a Sachs for it, it'll be way easier to keep it running strong and an old Hyperglide might need some new cogs to get back in shape (their's a reason they're cheap) and you won't be able to find any. Do a search for "vintage bicycle" and you will get a few places that sell NOS Campy, brand new parts that are 15 years old. Also the Bicycle Trader has been key for me to keep my bike in original condition. They have a site at http://www.bicycletrader.com. Their on-line site doesn't have much, last I checked, but their newspaper is loaded with dealers and people selling old parts of all kinds.
