There are Shimano SPD pedals. I always see first timers usually use those since they are simple and two sided, but they are usually looked down upon for road use, especially serious road use. Also, due to its small size of the pedal, it is known to cause "hot foot" because all of the pressure is going to one small area. A Look pedal is larger in comparison and allows more even and efficient power distribution. Also, never stop on a hill, especially if you are in a group!! It is so hard to get back in when you are on a hill. I have been on Looks all my life and love them. You just have to practice using them at first and get used to them. After a while, they will become second nature and then biking on plain platform pedals will make you feel naked and insecure.
