A nipple will probably strip before a spoke fails UNLESS the wheel was built with OLDER, non-stainless/chrome steel spokes (i.e., glorified coat hangers). If the wheel is more than 30 years old, then relace it with new spokes. If the wheel is less than 15 years old, the spokes are probably "okay" ... What about the appearance of the wheel prompts your concern?
