Message: >My winter bike has a 7 speed setup currently. I'm using either a Shimano or Sun Tour freewheel, depending on the gear ratio I want for the day's ride. The derailleur is a late 80s Dura-Ace. I would like to switch to a Super Record derailleur, but does a SR have enough travel to shift over a 7 cog range? Thanks.>Regards, >Dan I encountered a problem shifting onto the smallest cog when using a Nuovo Record rear derailleur in a similar setup -- 126mm rear with a 7-speed SunRace rear FREEWHEEL [i.e., same cog spacing as a Shimano 7-speed freehub CASSETTE]. HOWEVER, after the fact (i.e., switching _back_ to a contemporary rear derailleur), it occurred to me that I could PROBABLY have put a thin spacer/washer between the derailleur and the dropout hanger which would have provided the "extra" millimeter the derailleur "needed" to MAKE a consistenly clean shift -- no guarantees. The main reason I'm not using the NR rear derailleur on the particular bike is because I've opted for a woosier large cog than the derailleur can realistically handle.
